What a Difference a Border Makes

We've been cycling for 5 days, and have already been in 5 countries: Britain, France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. That's very different from our 4000-mile trip in one country a year ago, when we biked across the United States.

It's quite striking how much changes when you cross the artificial line of a border between two countries. The five countries we've been in are all quite different from one another (not better or worse, just different) despite the fact that the total distance we've traveled so far is only about 270 miles. When we crossed from Holland to Germany today, the landscape went from immaculate and sculpted to merely neat and tidy, cyclists went from plentiful to relatively few, bike paths went from everywhere to hit-or-miss, & English-as-a-second-language speakers went from universal to occasional. And those are just a few superficial observations that we noted in the few hour trip today.
