Crossing the Rhine

Our ride today, from Kamp-Lintfort to Ludinghausen, Germany, took us over the the Rhine River, which we crossed by ferry. The Rhine River begins in the Swiss Alps and ends 766 miles later at the North Sea in Holland. The country with the longest stretch of the river is Germany.

The river's name derives from the Celtic word "renos", which means "raging flow". It has long been, and remains today, a major economic artery in Europe. An interesting historical fact is that the first two bridges over the Rhine were built by Julius Caesar in 55 and 53 BC.

It's a mystery to me why every town we pass through has at least one marvelous bakery and pastry shop, but  we never found anything similar in small-town America on our cross-US ride last year
