One-and-a-Half Biking Days Compressed into One

Our itinerary had us scheduled to do a 55 mile ride from Burg to Potsdam on Monday 6/20, staying overnight at the Hotel Bayerische Haus, followed by a short 23 mile ride to Berlin on Tuesday. Bayerische Haus is a Relais & Chateau hotel, a designation indicating fine lodging and dining, and our goal in staying there was to pamper ourselves with a gourmet dinner 11 days into our trip. Shortly before starting our Monday ride, we checked the Bayerische Haus website & noted that their fine restaurant is open every day except Monday. Intensely disappointed, we cancelled our reservation there and instead biked 78 miles to Berlin, where we'll now have two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) to enjoy the city before taking off on Thursday on our ride from Berlin into Poland.

The long Monday ride was a scenic one, including the picturesque towns of Brandenburg (where we stopped for a mid-morning pastry break) and a Potsdam (where we stopped for lunch). Potsdam is the site of the conference in July-August 1945 where, at the end of World War II, Stalin, Truman, & Churchill met and agreed to divide Germany into four parts: one each for US, England, France, and Russia. The first three of these parts joined shortly thereafter to form West Germany and the last became Easy Germany, with these two remaining separate until German reunification in 1989.
