Our First Mountainous Day

After seven days of fairly flat terrain, we had a very hilly ride on Friday. The journey, from Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock to Salzhemmendorf, Germany, took us over several mountain ridges, with beautiful valleys, rivers, and towns in between. One half-mile stretch had a steep 11% pitch, which is at about the limits of our ability to cycle carrying 25 pounds of baggage. Fortunately, the previous 7 days of cycling had gotten our legs into good shape, so we arrived at our destination feeling fine, ready to answer emails and do some work.

A mid-morning break for pastry & Diet Coke to provide energy and hydration for the upcoming mountains

Trouble ahead!

  1. Dear Dr. Benson this is Alfred with Nanosonics - glad to read and see you made it across the pond for your biking adventure - shame the weather isn’t what you might have hoped for (at least this weekend) saw your tour map up close and it doesn’t look like you are going to be near Hamburg after all - too bad ! - I would have liked to show you some of Hamburgs highlights - anyway, if there is anything you need assistance with or need questions answered while on German soil give me a shout ( +4915115675433 / mail@alfredmueller.de ) anytime - Best of luck to you and your partner! I will be following your tour as it unfolds - PS: loved your comparison between Holland vs Germany when crossing the border - spot on !!! Best wishes and happy biking! Alfred
